Ind vs Eng 2nd Test Day 1: Ton Up Shubman Leads From The Front

Shubman Leads from the front

Ind vs Eng – Ben Stokes Invites Shubman To Bat

The 2nd Test between India and England began at Edgbaston under bright sunshine as Ben Stokes won the toss and invited India to Bat. England were unchanged from the previous test in Headingley, while India made three changes. Akash Deep, Nitish Reddy, and Washington Sundar were drafted into the team at the expense of Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, and Sai Sudharsan. Kuldeep Yadav, India’s best spinner, missed out yet again.

Jaiswal Fights Back As India Lose Rahul Early

The script played out quite similarly to the Headingley Test on Day 1. A placid pitch, an aggressive Jaiswal, and a brilliant  Shubman Gill. India lost KL Rahul early to a testing spell from Chris Woakes, but Yashasvi Jaiswal was at his fluent best as he counter-punched in the company of Karun Nair.

A Determined Shubman Holds Fort

Brydon Carse got the better of Karun, but Jaiswal and Shubman Gill steadied the ship once again. Shubman was circumspect and had stoic determination writ large on his demeanor. Though India lost Jaiswal ( he deserved a century), Rishabh Pant ( who holed out to long on off Shoaib Bashir), and Nitish Reddy in fairly quick succession, Shubman held fort.

Shubman Hits 2nd Ton – Leads From The Front

Ravindra Jadeja, the most experienced member of the Indian Team, then played a fine hand to arrest a possible slide. The calm and focussed Shubman got to his second century of the tour. It was an innings that showcased Shubman’s resilience and how well he had slipped into the captaincy shoes and assumed the responsibility of a leader.

Shubman- Jadeja Guide India To A Good Position

Shubman and Jadeja safely guided India to 310/5 at the close of play. England bowled well and gave away nothing, barring Josh Tongue who continued to be expensive all day long.

An Interesting Day Awaits

An interesting Day 2 awaits us. The first session might just be the determining factor in the orientation of this test. India needs a healthy score on the board, considering the fact that the absence of Bumrah might have halved India’s bowling strength.
