Wimbledon 2025: Top Seeds Bite The Dust
Wimbledon 2025 has begun on a crazy note indeed. Unprecedented, to say the least, the beautifully manicured grass courts have witnessed absolute carnage. It has been a bizarre spectacle of the top seeds and the best players in the world, biting the greens at the hands of resolute challengers. Round 1 will be remembered for a long time to come.
Coco Gauff – The Most Startling Ouster At Wimbledon ’25
The most startling ouster of the day had to be the World No. 2 in women’s tennis and the just-crowned French Open Champion, the American Coco Gauff. The match played on Centre Court late in the evening belonged to Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, who simply outplayed Gauff and bundled her off in straight sets 7-6, 6-1.
Poor From Gauff As Yastremska The Deserving Winner
Gauff blamed the loss on the surface as she struggled to adjust to the pacy grass court from the slow red clay of Roland Garros. Yastremska was clearly the better player, winning 64 points against 52 by Gauff. The American had a tough time with her first serves and could only manage 45% of them in, which was significantly below her standards. Gauff’s 9 double faults did not help either. Yastremska was good in all departments and was a deserving winner.
Zverev Too Sent Packing Despite Playing Well
Alexander Zverev, the World No. 3, lost to Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in a 5-set duel that lasted more than 4 hours on the Centre Court. The German did not play badly, but Rinderknech was too good when it mattered. Zverev’s stats were exemplary with 31 Aces and a massive 81% First serves, but he was unable to convert any of the 9 breakpoints he had in the match. On the other hand, Rinderknech converted 3 of the 12 break points he had on the Zverev serve. The fact that Rinderknech was more driven and did not lose his serve in the entire match, ensured his victory over Zverev. The Final scoreline read 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
Some More Carnage
Several other seeds, both in the Gentlemen’s and the Ladies’ draw, including J Pegula, Bublik ( who was the winner at Halle last week), and U Humbert, were sent packing.
Not All Lost As Sinner, Alcaraz, Djokovic, Sabalenka Advance to Round 2
For the Fans, however, there was some cheer with Jannik Sinner, Djokovic, defending champion Alcaraz ( who had a scare) and the crowd favourite, Brit, Jack Draper, made it to the second round. Aryna Sabalenka and Rybakina, the two hardest hitters on the women’s tour, were easy winners going into the second round.
The Round 2 begins today, and I hope some sanity prevails.
