A Duel In Tough Weather
It was a duel between two of my favourites. One who is giving me lots of joy and the other who has been inflicting pain. I was looking for a keen contest and so it transpired in a terribly inclement weather at Anfield, Liverpool.
Liverpool Struck By Martinez
Confident Liverpool were kept at bay by the United defence in the first half and particularly Onana, the enigmatic United Goalkeeper was in fabulous form. Against the expectations Lisandro Martinez scored early in the second half that set up the match beautifully. His strike from a difficult angle from the left flank was a treat to watch.
Gakpo Responds With A Beauty
Liverpool responded within 6 minutes through Cody Gakpo. The Dutchman who is enjoying a rich run of form scored with his right foot from the left flank piercing the acutest of angles and beating the very good Onana. The scores were levelled.
Diallo Cancels Salah’s Penalty
Mo Salah scored his 18th goal of the season with a lucky penalty, but Liverpool could not hold on to the lead as Amad Diallo buried a brilliant Garnacho cross 9 minutes from the finish. Amad Diallo once again showed his scoring ability and how important he is for United. Onana capped a brilliant day with another few saves before Harry Mcguire missed a sitter in front of the Liverpool goal.
Liverpool Lucky To Escape With A Draw
Liverpool were not at their best and though the weather was inclement to say the least, the leaders took the game a bit easy and were lucky to escape with a draw.
A Moral Victory For United
Manchester United were the moral winners and particularly played extremely well from the left flank, which Liverpool found difficult to control. It was indeed a fair result, with United being the happier side than the hosts.
In the end I was satisfied with the outcome. I was happy to see United fight it out in the cold and that Liverpool still continued with their stranglehold on the EPL this season.
