At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Croatia managed to reach the semi-finals and grabbed the third place too. In an aging team led by Luka Modric, a 20-year-old, well-built Croat, stole the limelight. He was brilliant in defense and played in the midfield too. The young Dinamo Zagreb player had caught the attention of the best clubs in the world.

Come 2023, Manchester City signed Gvardiol for an undisclosed fee ( said to be about €90 mn) on a 5 year contract. Manchester City thus ensured that they would have the best years of the young defender.

Gvardiol, a quick learner is proving his worth at City, in no uncertain terms. He is not only aware of his role in defense but is also contributing in putting the ball in good areas and making it easy for the likes of Haaland and the rest to score. However, what has impressed me most is his ability to score as well, with his lethal left foot.

The equalizer against Wolves this Sunday was arguably the best goal of Match Day 8 in the EPL. In a tough match at the Wolves’ home ground and a goal down, Gvardiol produced an absolute ripper from outside the box beating the goalkeeper with deadly power and direction. It was indeed a show of exquisite skill from the Croat. With Erling Haaland, City’s goal scoring machine having a lean period off late, Gvardiol’s show of versatility is great news for City in their quest for defending their crown.
