The Russia-Ukraine conflict is raging and though I expected that the war would be brought to a halt sooner than later, unfortunately to my utter dismay the embers are still burning. Can there be a thaw between the warring countries is definitely what concerns the world today. The rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis has also put the neighboring countries, sharing borders with Ukraine in particular, on the edge. Poland, Hungary, and Romania have been sucked in this conflict with pressures at their borders for evacuation and aid to the besieged. The severe cold too is an added dimension that has made things more difficult. The situation is tough and we certainly need a break now, don’t we?

On a lighter note, to address this frost and bring in some warmth I look up to Poland’s Cieple Lodi, the Warm Ice Cream. Many would wonder, can there be an Ice Cream which is warm? The fact is that there truly exists a warm Ice Cream for which Polish people have taken the honors. It is claimed that Cieple Lodi was invented by the nutritionists of the Polish People’s Republic which existed from 1947 till 1989, before the birth of the modern Republic of Poland.
The warm Ice Cream is one of the most popular desserts in Poland particularly during winters. It’s ready availability across Poland and the extremely affordable price tags have made it a favourite choice when it comes to Desserts in Poland. The warm Ice Cream is an egg white and sugar based mousse with a chocolate, strawberry or any fruit syrup topping, presented in a waffle cup. With several flavours this simple but delicious dessert is a craze in Poland.
Though the dessert is more of a French or Italian Meringue ( a bakery product made of well beaten egg whites and sugar ) than an ice cream ( there is no ice involved ), it has been named warm Ice Cream purely on the basis of its texture, presentation, taste and visual delight. Even Hungary has its own version of a warm Ice Cream called as Telifagyi, the winter Ice Cream.

Though the efforts of the World community are well and truly focussed on resolving the conflict and restoring peaceful co-existence amongst the warring sides, we need something warm like the Cieple Lodi between Russia and Ukraine. History has seen how Culinary delights bring communities together and desserts in particular are symbols of happiness, friendship, peace and well being.
I sincerely hope that we have a quick resolution to the ongoing war, though it is not going to be easy. However, till such time, try preparing the Cieple Lodi and enjoying it. You may find out more about the Warm Ice Cream in my book Polish September too.
