The World was slowly but surely getting back to its feet after reeling under a relentless pandemic for almost two years. The deserted work places seemed to be getting populated, travel was beginning to happen, commercial jets had taken to the skies, Hotels and Restaurants were feeling the buzz again, spectators were back in stadiums to watch their favourites play and theatres heaving a huge sigh of relief. In general after fighting a gruelling battle with Corona virus, which brought in its wake death and desperation, the green shoot of recovery was so welcome. However, just as we were beginning to rejoice, the Russia-Ukraine War has erupted which has dampened the spirit of the World no end. The euphoria seems to be short lived.
The conflict has been raging for the past week or so and despite several resolutions of the UNGA and appeals by leaders worldwide for a ceasefire and diplomatic resolution of the conflict, the War does not show signs of impeding any time soon. In today’s times, when we are talking of a closely knit human race, free flow of knowledge, better communication, free travel across borders, exchange of cultures, tolerance and a much more inclusive co-existing world, how can there be room for War.
For me, War is nothing but an abbreviated form of (W)aste of (A)ssets and (R)esources. For any country building infrastructure and immovable assets is a long time ask. However it just takes a few seconds of bombing to turn these assets into smithereens. Years and years of labour and hardwork extinguished in a moment of unthinkable rage. What a waste. And if this was not enough what to say of the people in flesh and blood who are the most important asset of any country. Death and deprivation is all they get. A huge humanitarian crises unfolds. What a terrible waste again.
The War has to be fuelled by massive monetary resources, which puts a huge stress not only on the economy of the countries involved, but even the world experiences its ripples. The ongoing war is expected to trigger a sharp rise in fuel prices which is going to affect everyone in the world. The aviation and hospitality industry which was so badly affected due to the pandemic will again feel the pressure of rising fuel prices. This is just an example and Infact life across the globe will get affected adversely. What a waste.
The argument above may be good enough to realise that War just cannot be an option in today’s times. We need to preserve our assets and resources and bring them to good use solely for the benefit of the human race. Let there be no bloodshed, no lives lost, no homes destroyed, no children orphaned. The world had enough of this. There has been too much of waste.
I am praying for rational thinking and rooting for Peace...and expecting the same from the world.
