John Cena changed WWE by becoming the company’s face for two decades and by pushing the idea that a wrestler could be a mainstream star. He retired in December 2025 as a record 17-time world champion, but his influence goes beyond titles. Here is how he did it.

The Rise

Cena began wrestling in 1999 and signed with the World Wrestling Federation in 2001. He debuted on WWE SmackDown in 2002 against Kurt Angle, losing the match but earning praise for his effort. Over 24 years with the company he became one of its most marketable and reliable performers.

The Records

Cena won the WWE Championship a record 14 times and the World Heavyweight Championship three times. At WrestleMania 41 in April 2025 he won the Undisputed WWE Championship for the 14th time, which made him a record 17-time world champion and passed Ric Flair’s mark of 16. That run also made him the eighth heel to win a WrestleMania main event, and he finished his career with a Grand Slam.

The Cena Effect Beyond the Ring

Cena is known for his charity work. He has granted more than 650 wishes for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a Guinness World Record and the most in the organization’s history, and he made troop support part of his public image. His slogan “Never Give Up” and the “Hustle, Loyalty, Respect” message became part of WWE’s identity, and he later moved fully into acting.

The Final Match

Cena’s retirement tour started at the 2025 Royal Rumble and ended on December 13, 2025 at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C. He chose to lose clean, tapping out to Gunther, who had won the Last Time Is Now tournament to earn the match. After the match, Triple H and WWE’s roster came out to congratulate him. He also signed a five-year WWE ambassador deal to mentor younger talent.

The Legacy

Cena’s legacy is the combination of record-setting success, a willingness to put younger stars over and an unusual level of public goodwill. For the era he helped hand over, see our look at how Cody Rhodes became one of WWE’s biggest superstars.
