Attack on Titan

Spoilers ahead. Attack on Titan has one of the most shocking endings in anime because it turns its hero into the story’s greatest threat and then offers no easy comfort. Hajime Isayama’s manga ended in April 2021 after 139 chapters, and the anime concluded in November 2023. Here is why it still stuns viewers.

The Hero Becomes the Threat

Eren Yeager uses the Founding Titan’s power to awaken an army of Colossal Titans, an event known as the Rumbling. The protagonist viewers followed for years chooses mass destruction, and the story forces his closest friends to stop him. For many fans, that reversal is the single biggest shock.

Mikasa’s Impossible Choice

The crisis ends when Mikasa decapitates the Attack Titan, and the curse of Ymir is lifted. The scene is both a victory and a loss, because the person she loved is the one she has to kill. Some viewers found it devastating, while others felt it left Eren’s motives unresolved.

An Epilogue That Refuses Comfort

The 85-minute anime finale, which aired on November 4, 2023, ends many years later. Paradis is attacked again, and a boy with a dog finds the tree growing over Eren’s burial site. It suggests that violence may repeat, which many fans found bleak. That final image is a large part of why the ending is still discussed.

The Creator’s Response

Isayama apologized for the manga’s ending at Anime NYC in 2022 and asked fans to be kind. He later told The New York Times that he had to give up on a happy ending in which the war simply ends. He also provided new storyboards for the anime’s finale, which clarified some of Eren’s motives.

Why It Still Lands

The ending is shocking because it follows its own logic: freedom has a terrible cost, and the story refuses to pretend otherwise. Whether you love it or reject it, it is hard to forget.
