Manchester City had the ball and the shots, but Aston Villa had Nicolas Jackson. His two goals, both from Villa’s only two shots on target, were enough to hand City a 2-1 defeat, their first of the EPL season under Enzo Maresca, at Villa Park.

Jackson strikes early

Villa were ahead in the sixth minute, with Jackson putting them in front, and City spent most of the afternoon chasing. Unai Emery’s side then sat deep, absorbed pressure and looked to hit City on the break. City finished with 63% possession, but much of it came in areas that didn’t hurt Villa.

Haaland levels, Jackson responds

City made two changes at the break and levelled in the 52nd minute through Erling Haaland. For a while it looked as if the visitors would take over.

Villa’s response was quick. Eight minutes later, in the 60th, Jackson struck again to complete his double and put Villa back in front. That settled the afternoon. It was a moment of quality at the right time, and City couldn’t find a way back.

The numbers tell a different story

On paper, City should have won. They had 15 shots to Villa’s 8 and put seven on target to Villa’s two. They also won the corner count 7-4.

Zion Suzuki is the reason it didn’t count. The Villa keeper made six saves, and only Haaland’s goal beat him from City’s seven shots on target. At the other end, Jackson scored with both of Villa’s efforts on target, while Donnarumma never made a save.

A bad-tempered finish

The game got scrappy as it wore on. Villa committed 20 fouls to City’s 17, and each side picked up four yellow cards. Villa took two bookings within a minute of each other early in the second half and two more late on, at 83′ and 90′. City collected two in the space of three minutes around the 75th minute. The yellows suggest Villa were hanging on and City were frustrated.

What it means

For Villa, this is a statement result after a patchy start to the season, which included a heavy 4-0 defeat at Brighton in August. It follows a 1-0 win at Newcastle last weekend, so they now have back-to-back league victories against big opposition. Jackson’s finishing and the team’s discipline are the template Emery will want to keep.

For City, it was a familiar frustration. Haaland found the net, but too many chances went straight at Suzuki. They will need to be more ruthless in front of goal.

Villa host Fulham on Saturday 31 October at Villa Park, then travel to Manchester United on 8 November. If Jackson keeps scoring like this, they will fancy their chances in both.
