Kiyotaka Ayanokoji is one of anime’s most mysterious protagonists because the series shows his results long before it explains him. He looks like an average student, but he is far from it. Here is why viewers keep trying to figure him out.
A Student Who Hides His Ability
In Classroom of the Elite, Ayanokoji enrolls in Class D at Advanced Nurturing High School, where students are ranked by ability. Reports describe him as having the intelligence and physical strength to succeed, yet he deliberately downplays both. He prefers to move others from behind the scenes instead of standing out.
The White Room Question
The biggest mystery is his past. He was raised in the White Room, a secretive facility, and is described as its most successful product. Its founder is his father, Atsuomi Ayanokoji, who appears in the light novels. When he came to the school, he told Kiyotaka to return and sign a withdrawal form, and said he would bring his son back at any cost.
Season 4 Raises the Stakes
Season 4 premiered on Crunchyroll on April 1, 2026, with a 90-minute broadcast covering the first four episodes. It adapts the start of Ayanokoji’s second year, and a first-year student from the White Room is trying to get him expelled. Early reviews note that Ayanokoji does not yet know who the student is, which forces him into a more direct role than before.
Why It Keeps Viewers Guessing
The series rarely shows his thoughts in full. Others react to what he does, and the story gives out his motives in pieces. That makes him hard to read: is he a manipulator, a survivor, or both? Some critics call him one of the smartest characters in anime, though that is an opinion.
What Comes Next
The anime premiered in July 2017 and Lerche has adapted the light novels by Shōgo Kinugasa across four seasons. A fifth season has been announced, and the coverage reviewed gives no date. Shōya Chiba voices Ayanokoji in Japanese, and Justin Briner voices him in English. For another character-driven story, read our piece on why Dr. Stone’s science-based story stands out.
