Sentenced to Be a Hero is a dark fantasy anime in which being a hero is a punishment, not an honor. Based on a light novel, it aired in early 2026. Here is what to know about its story, cast and release.
What Is the Story About?
Xylo Forbartz is a former Holy Knight commander who killed the goddess he was contracted with after she was corrupted by a demonic blight. He is then dispatched to the front lines as the field leader of Penal Hero Unit 9004. Criminals in this world are sentenced to fight demons, and Xylo eventually joins forces with the goddess Teoritta to try to end the cycle.
The Dark Fantasy World
The setting treats heroism as a cover-up and a punishment. Several characters, including a high priest, were arrested and sentenced as part of a plot to hide the truth, much like Xylo. The tone is grim throughout.
