Witch Hat Atelier

Witch Hat Atelier is a fantasy anime about a girl who discovers that magic is drawn, not cast. Based on Kamome Shirahama’s manga, it aired in spring 2026. Here is what to know about its release, characters and world.

What Is the Story About?

Coco lives in a world where magic seems reserved for those born with it. One day she meets a witch named Qifrey and realises that a book she bought is actually about magic. She uses it to cast a spell by accident, which encases her mother and home in crystal. Qifrey takes her on as an apprentice so she can learn magic and try to undo the damage.

The Magical World Explained

The story is set on the Zozah Peninsula, where magic is performed by drawing runes with special ink. Because spells can be dangerous, magic is tightly regulated and entrusted to a select few after past abuses of forbidden spells. Shirahama has cited The Lord of the Rings as a major influence on the world.

Main Characters and Cast

  • Coco, voiced by Rena Motomura.
  • Qifrey, Coco’s teacher, voiced by Natsuki Hanae.
  • Agott, Tetia and Richeh, Qifrey’s other apprentices, voiced by Hibiku Yamamura, Kurumi Haruki and Hika Tsukishiro.
  • Olruggio, Qifrey’s childhood friend, voiced by Yuichi Nakamura.

Release Date and Production

The anime was announced in April 2022 and first planned for 2025, but it was delayed so the studio could improve quality. Bug Films animated it, with Ayumu Watanabe as director. It aired from April 6 to June 22, 2026, for 13 episodes. Crunchyroll streamed it outside Japan, with an English dub arriving on the same day as the Japanese premiere.

Season 2 and the Manga

A second season was announced on June 29, 2026, though no air date has been confirmed in the coverage reviewed. The manga began in Kodansha’s Morning Two in July 2016 and had more than 9 million copies in circulation by June 2026, so there is plenty of story left to adapt.
