Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea: Chaos, Goals and yes, a Genuine Glimmer of Hope.

Alonso has been in charge of Chelsea for seven Premier League games, and the verdict so far is that it has been wild, entertaining and far from perfect. Is a revival on? The early signs say yes, and if the last two games ( Bournemouth and Everton) are any indication, the yes has to be written in bold.

The Appointment That Signals Intent

Chelsea turned to Alonso in May, after sacking Liam Rosenior just 106 days into his reign, and gave him a four-year deal. He was given the title of “manager” rather than “head coach”, a first for the club in 13 years, and reports say he secured assurances over transfer strategy and authority before accepting. For a club that has churned through coaches showing little patience, that matters.

The Numbers: Thrilling, and a Little Terrifying

4th on the EPL Leaderboard, a big plus

17 goals scored, third-best in the division

13 conceded, a major headache

5-1 demolition of Bournemouth and then a hard-fought 2-0 victory over plucky Everton with a clean sheet is great news too.

Injury to Emi Martinez, a big concern for Alonso.

A Free Scoring Chelsea

Chelsea are scoring freely but defending badly. Alonso admits as much: “You need a lot of clean sheets to win trophies, but you need to score a lot of goals.” But getting through Everton without conceding a goal must have been a great confidence booster for Alonso and his squad.

The Honest Verdict From The Boss

Alonso isn’t getting carried away. He says it’s too early to judge whether Chelsea are heading the “right way”, and that February is when we’ll know. He also has an injury concern in defence, with Reece James potentially out beyond Christmas, and with Enzo Fernández moving to Manchester City, there is certainly a bit of a vacuum in defence and the midfield.

So, Is A Revival On The Cards?

Yes, with caveats. The attack is clearly clicking, and Alonso’s track record, including Leverkusen’s first league title in their history, suggests he can fix structure over time. But a defence that leaks goals will cost points against the top sides.

A promising start, not a revolution yet. If the back line settles, Chelsea’s top-four push looks real.
