Marvel Reveals New Look for Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday

A New Title: Lord Doom

Marvel Studios has shown a new look for Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. The reveal comes through a new Funko Pop figure. The figure is part of Funko’s Concept Series. It gives the character a new title: “Lord Doom”. The figure still has Doctor Doom’s classic green robe and metal faceplate. But it also adds new details. There are golden medals on his torso. The flag of Latveria is also featured. These details point to Doom’s role as the leader of Latveria.

Doom as the Leader of Latveria

This is important because past live-action versions of Doctor Doom have not shown him as the ruler of Latveria. In the comics, Latveria is a fictional Eastern European country. Doom is its leader. The new figure suggests the movie will include this part of his story. Marvel first hinted at this in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. 

In that movie, Susan Storm speaks to member nations of the Future Foundation. All members are present except one. There is an empty chair for the Latverian delegation. The movie never says that seat belongs to Victor von Doom. But most fans believed it could only be him. Now the new Funko figure makes that idea stronger.

This means fans should expect to see the political side of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. He is not just a villain with a metal mask. He is also a public figure on the world stage.
