Zidane To Face Italy After The Headbutt

Zinedine Zidane is set to face Italy for the first time since the infamous 2006 World Cup final headbutt as France host Italy in the UEFA Nations League at the Stade de France in Paris.

Zidane’s First Match in France Since Succeeding Didier Deschamps

The match marks Zidane’s first home fixture since taking over as head coach of Les Bleus, succeeding Didier Deschamps in July 2026. Exactly 20 years after his red card in Berlin for headbutting Marco Materazzi in his final professional match as a player, Zidane steps onto the touchline in a suit to face the Azzurri.

Homecoming at Stade de France

This is Zidane’s first appearance at the Stade de France since a pre-World Cup friendly against Mexico in 2006 as a player.

Strong Start as Manager

Zidane has won his first two games as France coach, securing consecutive 1–0 away victories against Turkey and Belgium in Nations League action.

Italy Have Arrived In Paris After A Good Win

The Azzurri were clinical against Turkiye, winning 4-1. A young side, with loads of talent, Italy are showing signs of their pedigree under Roberto Mancini, despite losing to Belgium in Rome.

Les Bleus Remain Favourites…

Les Bleus remain the favourites tonight in Paris despite Kylian Mbappe’s absence. Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise remain France’s major weapons against a tight Italian defence.

… But The Headbutt Undercurrent Remains

The undercurrent of Zidane’s headbutt, however, is bound to linger, right through the match.
