Jalen Duren #0 of the Detroit Pistons

Duren Accepts Big Deal Before Deadline

Jalen Duren has agreed to a five-year, $200 million contract with the Detroit Pistons. The deal was confirmed on Thursday night by a person with knowledge of the agreement. Duren accepted the offer shortly before a midnight deadline on a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer. The Pistons had not yet announced the signing. ESPN, The Athletic, and The Detroit News were among the first to report the agreement.

An Odd Negotiation Saga Comes to an End

The agreement brings an end to a strange situation. It seemed as if Duren might actually pass on the $200 million offer. He was not on Detroit’s initial training camp roster while the contract talks continued. The Pistons, like most NBA teams, have been on the practice court since Tuesday. Duren made $6.5 million last season on his way to being an All-Star for the first time.

Duren’s Strong Regular Season

Duren averaged a career-high 19.5 points last season. He also averaged 10.5 rebounds per game on 65 per cent shooting. He made the All-NBA third team. The Pistons finished with the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference and won 60 games. Duren was named an All-Star alongside Cade Cunningham. It was his best year with the franchise. He also averaged 2.0 assists per game during the regular season.

Playoff Struggles Hurt the Pistons

The postseason was a different story for Jalen Duren. He struggled in the playoffs, averaging 10.2 points as the top-seeded Pistons failed to get out of the second round. During the 14 postseason games he played, which included two seven-game series against the Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavaliers, Duren averaged 10.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. That was a massive dip from his regular-season numbers. The Pistons lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in seven games in the second round. Instead, the New York Knicks went on to beat the San Antonio Spurs to win their first NBA championship in 53 years.

Duren’s Career So Far

Duren has averaged 13.5 points in his first four NBA seasons, all with Detroit. He has been a key part of the team’s growth. Now that he is extended for five years, Duren will look to prove he is worthy of the money Detroit is paying him. He will aim to contribute to another top finish in the Eastern Conference during the regular season and a deeper postseason run.

What’s Next for the Pistons

The preseason starts on October 5 at Little Caesars Arena against the Phoenix Suns. The 2026-27 regular season begins on October 20. The Pistons will host the Boston Celtics in the Motor City. With high expectations to take the next step, the team will be looking for Duren to get off to a strong start. After a disappointing playoff exit last season, the Pistons and their fans are hoping for a longer run this time. Now Jalen Duren has to show he can deliver when it matters most.
