Greece secured a landmark 1-0 victory against Germany at the WWK Arena in Augsburg during their UEFA Nations League Group A2 clash last night. The result marked Greece’s first-ever win against Germany in 11 international meetings.

The Home Debut For Klopp Gone Sour

The contest was Jurgen Klopp’s home debut as Head Coach of Germany. A win was the only expectation from a football crazy nation, looking to regain their prominence as a World Power in football. Greece were on a high after beating Serbia in a terrific 2-1 comeback victory. The Germans had played out a draw against the Netherlands after conceding a goal in stoppage time. Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala were unavailable due to injuries leaving Klopp to rework the squad.

Germany without a surprise dominated possession (76%) but the Greeks held firm, defending brilliantly to deny the Germans. It was like Greece of old, where scoring against them was nightmarish. Kourbelis Scores With A Lucky Break

The only goal of the match came in the 74th minute. Substitute Dimitrios Kourbelis broke the deadlock with a deflected strike from the edge of the box that wrong-footed goalkeeper Alexander Nübel. The Augsburg crowd was stunned. It was hard luck for the Germans and a lucky break for Greece. But they had done their bit to get a mighty share of good fortune.

Greece Go On Top of Their Group

With two wins from two matches (following their opening 2-1 win over Serbia), Greece sat on top of Nations League Group A2 with 6 points.
