The Netherlands and Germany played out a 1–1 draw in their 2026-27 UEFA Nations League opener at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam. The match had all the ingredients of a humdinger and so it panned out, in front of some vociferous home support .
Brian Brobbey Gets Injured In A Setback For The Dutch
Brian Brobbey got injured and was forced off the pitch in an absolute anti-climax. A lot was expected from Brobbey, and most certainly he was a real threat for Germany, but as destiny would have it, Xavi’s Dutch squad had to come to terms with the loss, regroup and take on Klopp’s Germany.

Nmecha Draws First Blood For Germany
Before the Dutch could regroup, the German’s took advantage of the stoppage. Felix Nmecha struck first for Germany in the 32nd minute capitalising on a loose ball to give Germany the lead.

The Dutch then went on the offensive, controlling the midfield and having the bulk of the possession. The Orange Army hammered 22 shots with 8 shots on goal, with the Dutch fans getting firmly behind their home team.

… But Marc-André ter Stegen Denies The Hosts
German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, however, was up to the task and made 7 good saves to deny the Dutch. Ter Stegen gave a tremendous account of himself replacing Manuel Neuer, one of the greats of the game and a German legend. The Dutch were kept at bay, but then there was a twist in the end.
Klopp’s Men Had Just A Few Minutes To Hold On..
With the match entering stoppage time, Klopp had to hold the Dutch for just a few minutes more and record a victory in his debut match as Head Coach of Germany, but it was not to be.
…But Cody Gakpo Fires A Volley To Steal A Draw
Cody Gakpo hammered home a volley in stoppage time off a cross from debutant Ruben van Bommel in a dramatic equaliser to snatch a point for the hosts. It indeed was a terrific finish from a composed Gakpo.
The Reverse Fixture Is on 27th November
It was a tremendous 1-1 draw and in my opinion a fair result too. Both teams will play their reverse fixture in Germany on the 27th of November 2026.
