Toto Wolff will miss the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with Bradley Lord set to lead Mercedes trackside as Kimi Antonelli and George Russell fight for the championships.
Mercedes will arrive in Baku this week without the man who has been at the centre of its Formula 1 operation for more than a decade. Team principal Toto Wolff is set to miss the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and will instead follow the weekend remotely, with deputy team principal Bradley Lord taking charge of the Mercedes operation at the circuit.
The news comes at an interesting point in Mercedes’ 2026 campaign. The team leads the Constructors’ Championship with 503 points after 14 Grands Prix, while Kimi Antonelli and George Russell occupy the top two positions in the Drivers’ Championship. Antonelli has 292 points, with Russell on 211.

Why Is Toto Wolff Missing The Baku Race?
There is currently no specific reason publicly given for Wolff’s decision to miss the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Reports confirm that the Austrian will not travel to Baku and will instead monitor Mercedes’ weekend from elsewhere.
That is important because there has been no indication that the decision is connected to Mercedes’ championship campaign or any problem within the team. Wolff has occasionally missed races in the past, meaning his absence from one Grand Prix does not automatically signal trouble behind the scenes. Mercedes will therefore rely on Bradley Lord to provide the team’s senior trackside leadership. Lord has already been heavily involved in the team’s operation and has worked closely with Wolff throughout the season.
Why Is Baku An Important Weekend For Mercedes?
Wolff’s absence comes just as Mercedes enters a crucial stretch of the season. Antonelli has won the last two Grands Prix in Italy and Spain, extending his championship lead to 81 points over Russell.
Russell, meanwhile, has admitted that he is realistically outside the title fight after finishing fifth in Madrid. That leaves Antonelli carrying Mercedes’ main championship challenge, although the team’s advantage at the top of the Constructors’ standings gives both drivers an important role in securing the title.
Baku will also test how Mercedes handles the balance between allowing its drivers to fight and protecting the team’s larger championship objective. Wolff previously made it clear that Antonelli and Russell would be allowed to race each other, provided they did not compromise Mercedes’ pursuit of both championships.

Who Will Lead Mercedes In Baku?
With Wolff away, Bradley Lord will become the team’s senior presence in Baku. His responsibilities will include overseeing Mercedes’ trackside operation during a weekend that begins earlier than normal. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix has been moved to Saturday, September 26, with practice taking place on Thursday and qualifying on Friday because of Azerbaijan’s Remembrance Day on September 27. That gives Mercedes a compressed weekend in which every decision matters. Antonelli comes into Baku with momentum, while Russell will be looking to close the gap to his teammate and keep his own championship challenge alive.
Wolff may not be standing inside the Mercedes garage, but the team’s objective remains exactly the same. The Silver Arrows have spent much of 2026 building a substantial advantage over their rivals, and Baku represents another opportunity to extend it.
