Dominik Szoboszlai Signs New Liverpool Contract

Dominik Szoboszlai’s Liverpool story is no longer just about becoming an important midfielder. The Hungary captain has now committed his long-term future to Anfield, signing a new five-year contract that keeps him at the club until 2031. Liverpool announced the agreement on July 17, with Szoboszlai putting pen to paper on fresh terms after two years at the club. The midfielder had two years remaining on his previous contract, but his performances and growing influence convinced Liverpool to secure his future much earlier.

How Did Dominik Szoboszlai Become So Important To Liverpool?

Szoboszlai arrived from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023 and immediately inherited one of the most recognisable shirts at Liverpool, the No. 8 previously worn by club legend Steven Gerrard. His first season showed flashes of what he could offer, but his development accelerated during the following campaigns. In 2025/26, Szoboszlai became one of Liverpool’s most consistent performers, appearing in 53 of the team’s 57 matches and contributing 13 goals and 12 assists.

Liverpool supporters ultimately voted him the club’s Standard Chartered Men’s Player of the Season. It was recognition of a campaign in which he repeatedly contributed from midfield while also filling in at right back when required.

Why Did Liverpool Want To Keep Dominik Szoboszlai?

The new contract is about more than protecting a talented midfielder. Szoboszlai has gradually become part of Liverpool’s leadership structure. Andoni Iraola has named him as one of the club’s three vice-captains for the 2026/27 season, alongside Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez, with Virgil van Dijk remaining captain. Szoboszlai also captains Hungary, giving him responsibility at both club and international levels.

His influence is now visible beyond his statistics. He has become one of the players Liverpool expect to set the intensity in midfield, press opponents, contribute defensively and provide a threat from distance. That development also explains why the new contract is so significant for the club’s next project under Iraola.

What Does Dominik Szoboszlai Want From His New Deal?

Szoboszlai made it clear after signing that staying at Liverpool was not simply about enjoying what he had already achieved. He wants more. The midfielder said he remains hungry to win everything possible with the club, specifically mentioning another domestic title and the Champions League. He also admitted that he believes he can still improve despite an outstanding individual campaign.

That ambition has already appeared on the pitch this season. Szoboszlai scored a stoppage time penalty to rescue a 2-2 draw at Newcastle on the opening weekend and later scored Liverpool’s equaliser in their 2-1 Champions League comeback against Atletico Madrid. Liverpool have therefore secured a player who is no longer simply developing into a key figure. Szoboszlai is already operating as one.
