Comparing the length of an NFL game to a cricket match is not as simple as it sounds. The reason is that cricket is played in several different formats, and each one lasts a very different amount of time. A T20 match can be over in a few hours, while a Test match can take five days. The Length of Cricket Matches by Format
Cricket’s duration depends mainly on the number of overs bowled. An over is a set of six deliveries. The three main international formats are T20, ODI, and Test cricket.
T20 is the shortest international format. Each team bats for a maximum of 20 overs. The International Cricket Council states that an average T20 match lasts about 3 hours and 20 minutes. This includes roughly 75 to 90 minutes per innings and a 10 to 20 minute break in between. In practice, especially in franchise leagues like the IPL, games can often stretch to 4 hours or more.
ODI is the 50-over format. Each team bats for a maximum of 50 overs. An ODI typically lasts about 7.5 to 8 hours. This includes two innings of around 3.5 hours each, separated by a 45-minute break, plus a 20 to 30 minute tea break.
Test cricket is the longest and oldest format. It is played over a maximum of five days, with each team having two innings. Play is scheduled for six hours per day. If a match goes the full distance, it takes about 30 hours of playing time across five days. Test matches are played in three two-hour sessions per day, with lunch and tea breaks.
There are also two shorter formats worth noting. T10 is a format where each team bats for 10 overs. A match lasts about 90 minutes. The Hundred is a 100-ball format used in the UK. Matches are designed to last about 2.5 hours.
Direct Comparison: NFL vs Cricket Formats
Now let’s put the numbers side by side. An NFL game takes about 3 hours and 12 minutes. A T10 cricket match takes about 1.5 hours. The Hundred takes about 2.5 hours. A T20 cricket match takes about 3 hours and 20 minutes. This is the closest equivalent to an NFL game in terms of total time. An ODI takes about 7.5 to 8 hours, which is more than twice as long as an NFL game. A Test match takes about 30 hours over five days, which is over nine times longer than an NFL game.
So if you are looking for a cricket format that is similar in length to an NFL game, T20 is the best match. Both last a little over three hours. But if you compare an NFL game to an ODI or a Test match, the difference is huge.
Why the Huge Difference in Duration?
The difference in duration comes down to the basic pacing and structure of each sport. The NFL is a game of stop-start action. There are short, high-intensity plays followed by long pauses. The clock is designed to stop frequently. Combined with commercial breaks, this stretches a 60-minute game into a three-hour-plus event.
Cricket is a more continuous game. An over of six balls can take several minutes. The duration is determined by the number of overs, not by a time clock. Test cricket adds another layer because it is played over multiple days. The state of the game, such as pitch conditions or a batting team trying to survive for a draw, can influence the pace of play.
