Toto Wolff has warned Kimi Antonelli to remain focused despite his huge 2026 F1 championship lead as Mercedes prepares for the final nine races.
Kimi Antonelli has gone from being one of Formula 1’s most exciting young talents to the man everyone is chasing for the 2026 World Championship. But just as the 20-year-old Italian begins to look increasingly comfortable at the top, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has delivered a reminder that the title is far from won.
Antonelli heads into the next phase of the season with an 81-point advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell after his victory in the Spanish Grand Prix. There are still nine races remaining, however, and Wolff knows that one bad weekend, a reliability problem, or an unexpected incident could quickly change the picture. That is why the Mercedes boss is refusing to let his young driver get carried away.

Why is Toto Wolff telling Antonelli to Stay Calm?
Antonelli’s rise has been remarkable. After a difficult rookie season, expectations were higher heading into 2026, but few could have predicted just how quickly he would become a championship contender. He has now established himself as Mercedes’ leading title challenger and has shown an ability to recover from difficult situations as well as dominate when the car is performing at its best. The problem for Mercedes is that success brings pressure.
With Antonelli leading the championship by such a significant margin, every mistake will receive greater attention. Wolff’s message is therefore less about questioning Antonelli’s ability and more about preventing the youngster from changing an approach that has worked so well. Antonelli has repeatedly insisted that he is not thinking about the championship while driving, and Wolff believes that attitude is genuine. The Mercedes boss has praised the Italian’s ability to separate the pressure of the title fight from his job behind the wheel.

Can Antonelli handle the pressure from here?
The biggest challenge may not come from a single rival. It could come from everything surrounding the championship. George Russell remains Antonelli’s closest threat, while Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris are still mathematically involved. More importantly, Mercedes has already seen how quickly a comfortable situation can become complicated.
The relationship between Antonelli and Russell has produced several tense moments this season. Their battle in Monza nearly ended with both Mercedes cars in trouble, forcing Wolff to remind his drivers that there is very little room for error when they are fighting each other at the front. That internal rivalry could become even more important as the championship reaches its final stages. Mercedes wants both drivers competing hard, but it cannot afford a clash between its two cars to hand valuable points to a rival.
Wolff’s warning, then, is about more than Antonelli simply avoiding mistakes. It is about keeping the entire situation under control. The Italian has already shown that he has the speed to win a championship. Now he needs to show that he has the composure to finish one. With an 81-point lead and nine races remaining, Antonelli has given himself an enormous advantage. But Formula 1 has a long history of championship fights changing direction when nobody expects it.
