F1: Max Verstappen – The One Who Burns The Road

Formula 1- The Best of Motorsport

Speed intoxicates  they say, which is truly evident when you watch Formula 1 car racing. There is nothing but exhilaration. The heart pounds as the engines roar. The wind gushes as cars fly in the blink of an eye. The Road burns  as tyres wither in acceleration. The adrenaline soars, witness to an   incredible  work ethic. The mind disbelieves the  seamless precision between man and machine and finally the emotions ascend at the sight of the chequered flag. Formula 1 car racing is indeed an implausible vision.

Max – The Crowd Puller

I have been a keen follower of the sport since the days of Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barrichelo, Mika Hakinen and the others. However, Schumacher’s exit  and then his accident led me to withdraw from the sport. In the interim, post Schumacher’s reign, Lewis Hamilton dominated Formula 1 car racing, but then came along Max Verstappen a driver so rare. His dominance has been severe and his  consecutive World Championships, racing the Red Bull,  in the last three seasons is validation of his exceptional skills behind the wheel. No wonder I am back watching and reading the Formula 1 fable unfold.

On A Record Setting Spree

Max Verstappen who races under the Dutch Flag has several firsts to his name. He was the youngest ever to compete in a  Formula 1 race when he participated at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix aged just 17. At the age of 18, he won the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix and became the youngest evert to win a Formula 1 race. He is just 26 now and has already won 3 World Championships back to back and also holds records for the most wins in a season and most consecutive wins too. There is no doubt that  Max Verstappen is different and is carving an Era of his own in the history of Motor Sport.

Max – The Fearless

The question which naturally arises, is what makes Max Verstappen so different. When Max  Verstappen  burst on the scene as a teenager he was giving the big names a run for their money. He was quick, courageous and had the gumption to take risks at high speeds. He was referred to as an ‘ edge of the seat ‘ competitor. At the Belgian Grand Prix in 2018, a 20 yr old Verstappen collided with the great Finn  Kimi Raikkonen and pushed   Sebastian Vettel and the others in a period of risky manouvers. Raikkonen extremely displeased by Max’s driving said “ he was going to cause a huge accident sooner or later “. Max received a gentle warning too from Formula 1 Director Charlie Whiting.

Physics Redefined

Max, the impatient risk taker learnt quickly and though he remained fearless and quick on the circuit, his sharp edges were slightly tempered. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff once described Max’s driving as ‘ Physics…redefined ‘, such was the skill at display when Max raced. It was not necessary for Max to have the fastest car to generate the fastest lap which made him completely stand out in the crowd. The 2023 season, saw complete supremacy of Max Verstappen over the field. He scored 575 points well above S. Perez who stood second at 285 points. He simply decimated the competition by winning an unprecedented 19 of the 22 races last season.

Stage Set for 2024

The race calendar for the 2024 season has been announced. There will be 24 races this year commencing from  Bahrain on 2nd of March and will culminate in Abu Dhabi on  December the 8th.

The Team All Set to Stretch Reign

Red Bull and Max Verstappen are an unassailable team as of now and are comfortably perched at the pinnacle of Formula 1. The new season is expected to be just as incredible as the previous ones. It would take a mighty effort from the rest to dislodge the prolific duo.

And…Max would be there to burn the roads again.

  1. Riz Khan in his latest blog has done well to highlight the emergence of the prodigy that is Max Verstappen in car-racing or motor sports.
Yes true we were once admiring fans of the heroics of the well-known Schumacher in the international racing circuits. But now this star performer has out- shadowed most contemporary competitors by wide margins and is leaving his own mark as a new rising star in this dangerous and dashing speed sport.
