When Sir Alex Ferguson retired from coaching Manchester United, there was massive anticipation. Who was going to fill his mammoth boots. Sir Alex handpicked David Moyes to take Manchester United forward. Moyes didn’t last a season and since then several Managers have come and gone and United have yet to come even close to the legacy of Sir Alex Ferguson.
I am nowhere suggesting or drawing parallels between Sir Alex and Pep Guardiola, even though the story stems from the same city, Manchester. Two different coaches, with two different styles and two different eras, just cannot be compared and so even their replacements, David Moyes and Enzo Maresca cannot be compared either.
The fact, however, remains that Maresca’s performance will be viewed with more zeal and focus, as it happened with David Moyes, putting that added amount of pressure day-in and day-out of the season.
The reference to David Moyes is to recollect how unnecessary pressure and unrealistic expectations can mar a good decision.
Enzo Maresca, however, having served as Pep’s assistant during the 2022–23 Treble season, understands the squad, culture, and tactical nuances inside out. In his stint with Chelsea Maresca proved his ability to manage elite talent and pressure to win both the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
Expecting Maresca to win 20 trophies or claim six titles in seven years is unrealistic for any manager. But he has Inherited a supremely talented and an extremely well settled squad, which is ready to back him to the hilt. Maresca’s tactical acumen and pedigree will compliment him further.
Maresca may just spring a surprise at Manchester City.
