Two Telling Blows
Two telling blows in seven minutes from the Defending Champions floored England, as the second semi-final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 saw Argentina reach their second consecutive final, while the Three Lions once again had their dream shattered right at the end.
An Amazing Show Of Unrelenting Resolve From Argentina
The Atlanta Stadium witnessed an amazing show of unrelenting resolve from Argentina, a team which refused to call it quits. It came back for the umpteenth time this season, and just when it looked as if it was all over, it turned the tables to knock over the opposition for good.
English Had Taken A Big Leap With The Anthony Gordon Goal…
England had a great chance. They had kept the Defending Champions at bay, and when Anthony Gordon tapped in a brilliant cross, fired in by Morgan Rogers from the right, England had taken a big leap towards the finals in the 55th minute.
… But Thomas Tuchel Decided To Retreat
The match, however, turned on its head at this very point. Thomas Tuchel, the England Manager, changed tactics. England retreated to their box in an extremely defensive move as Argentina went on the offensive to equalise.
A Relentless Argentina Pounded The English…
With everything to play for, Argentina were relentless. They pounded the English box in a phase of ferocious shelling, so to speak, as England retreated further to keep their lead intact. The defending champions hit the post twice, and it was only a matter of time before they equalised.
…As Enzo Fernández Equalised With A Sensational Goal
Lionel Messi, all of 39 but playing brilliantly, set up Enzo Fernández from just outside the English box. The Young Player of the World Cup last time around did not disappoint. He ripped one through the air, beating Pickford all ends up, in a sensational strike. Argentina had equalised in the 85th minute.
But England Continued To Hold Back
England had to reply quickly and change the tempo of the game, but Tuchel held back his strikers in Marcus Rashford, Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins and the rest.
Argentina Went For The Kill As Lautaro Martínez Headed Home A Terrific Messi Centre
Argentina, however, had smelt blood and were not going to give England another chance. In the second minute of the 11-minute stoppage time, Messi curled in an inch-perfect centre for Lautaro Martínez to head home the winner. The placement of the cross was exceptional from Messi, and Martinez too was in a perfect position to head the ball into the goal. Pickford yet again had no chance whatsoever.
England Try In The End But To No Avail
Tuchel, despite the second goal, delayed the arrival of Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney by a few more minutes, which further took the game away from England and stifled chances for an equaliser.
Argentina Held On To Record A Great Victory Over England
Argentina held fort and prevailed over England with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Three Lions. England had missed another chance to have a crack at the title and will have to wait another 4 years.
England Criticised
England’s approach to the game and their tactics midway through drew tremendous criticism from experts and fans alike. Once England had scored, instead of trying to get another goal, they retreated into an ultra-defensive mould. Argentina went on the offensive, sensing very much that England would not retaliate and won the battle.
Argentina Were Exceptional As A Team
In my opinion, Argentina were extremely good when it mattered. Losing the match was just not on their minds. The Champions, who don’t know how to lose, played brilliantly as a unit and with the kind of skills they possess, England were in trouble when they decided to sit back and allow Argentina to control the game.
An Incredible Messi
The brave men led by an incredible Messi triumphed over a timid England and will now face Spain for a crack at the title.
