It was baptism by fire for Curacao in a Group E game in Houston against the favourites, Germany.
The debutants were taken to the cleaners by a relentless German side which just kept on scoring, making life miserable for the first timers.
A 7-1 thrashing at the hands of the European Giants was an unexpected outcome. But the rookies just didn’t have the depth and skill and as the match went on, the belief too crumbled big time.
A brace from Kai Havertz and goals from Nmecha, Schlotterbeck, Musiala, Brown and Undav gave the German fans a lot to cheer in the beautiful Houston evening.
Curacao did fight initially with a goal from Comenencia in the 21st minute, but the Germans had smelt blood, as they went on a rampage, virtually scoring at will.
It was a tough lesson for Curacao as the sheer pressure from the Jurgen Nagelsmann’s side was too much to handle.
A Baptism By Fire indeed.
