It was an enthralling contest in Inglewood at the Los Angeles Stadium as the USMNT made a powerful statement in front of a massive American crowd.
Pochettino’s Men: Just Too Good
Paraguay, the South Americans were not easy opponents by any stretch of imagination, but the co-hosts under the tactical acumen of Mauricio Pochettino were just too good.
Balogun Seizes The Initiative After Paraguay Concede An OG
Once Paraguay conceded an own goal, the momentum of the game shifted decisively as Folarin Balogun, the Monaco striker, took centre stage with two goals in 19 minutes. Both goals saw a composed finish. The second one in particular saw Balogun beat two defenders before unleashing a powerful left-footer into the right-hand corner of the Paraguayan goal. By halftime, the fate of the match was virtually settled.
Paraguay Hit Back, But A Reyna Strike Seals It
Paraguay did get one back in the 73rd minute through Mauricio, but the Americans held on and sealed the game with an incredible strike from super sub Giovanni Reyna with the toe-end of his boot to score America’s fourth goal.
Tim Ream Stands Tall As USMNT Impress
A terrific performance from the USMNT. They just cannot be taken lightly and have the spark to go deep into the tournament. The defence also stood well for Pochettino, with the big Tim Ream standing tall in the centre-back position. A great show indeed from the Americans.
Canada Seeking Their First Points
In the opening match of the day, Canada crossed swords with a gritty Bosnia & Herzegovina. Les Rouges were desperate for their first win in a World Cup, and no wonder wanted to send out a statement as co-hosts of the Tournament.
Bosnia Score Early To Put Pressure On Canada
The start, however, was not the one they wanted as Bosnia scored from a Lukic header in the 21st minute. The Canadians were pushed back a bit as Bosnia began to gain ascendancy in the match. However, the Reds survived. Bosnia should have scored a few more, but the Bosnians wasted opportunities as a Canadian revival began to take shape in the second half.
Cyle Larin Scores After An Inspired Substitution
Jesse Marsch, Canada’s manager, made changes and brought in Cyle Larin in the 75th minute. The move paid rich dividends as Larin scored three minutes later with an incredibly composed and cool finish. It was a sensational strike which sent the crowd into a rapturous applause. Canada had equalised.
Canada & Bosnia Settle For A Draw
In the final stages of the game, Canada pressed forward and came close to scoring, but the Bosnians put their bodies on the line to ensure that the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Les Rouges Earn Their First World Cup Point
Canada eventually earned their first World Cup point. The co-hosts displayed a lot of fight, and despite trailing for a major part of the match, Les Rouges showed huge determination to come back into the game. For Bosnia, it was an opportunity missed.
