Antoine Griezmann played his last match for Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano last night, against Girona, and emerged victorious.

In a brief ceremony after the match, Griezmann was bid goodbye after a decade with the Club since he arrived at the Metropolitano in 2014. In all these years, under the watchful eye of Diego Simeone, Griezmann grew into an incredible player and at one point in time was arguably the best midfielder in the game, who could even finish brilliantly.

Griezmann’s stature grew at Atletico, and though he could not win the La Liga or the UEFA Champions League, Atletico remained a formidable team with Griezmann at the core of it. No wonder Griezmann holds the record of the all-time highest goal scorer for Atletico.

Winning the World Cup for France in 2018 was the highlight of Griezmann’s career, and even at the 2022 World Cup, Griezmann was sublime for France, playing brilliantly.

As the tributes began to unravel, Griezmann cried, and so did everyone in the stadium. There was not a single dry eye around. Even the tough Simeone could not hold back his tears. The owners and the administrators all cried.

The Frenchman, in all humility, apologised for his move to Barcelona in 2019, though he returned to his team two years later.

Griezmann would be joining Orlando City in the MLS this summer and will be bracing up for battle against the likes of Lionel Messi and Son Heung-min.

An excellent player indeed.
