The World’s Focus Is Shifting Towards The World Cup
With less than a month to go for one of the World’s biggest Sporting Events, the FIFA World Cup 2026, there is a palpable interest developing across the continents. With Club Football completing their seasons this month, the focus is gradually but surely shifting towards the mega event in Canada, Mexico and the United States of America.
The Debutants – The Rookie Quartet
No wonder the big teams like Argentina, Brazil, France, England, Spain, etc. are dominating discussion centres; however, there are a few teams that have also caught the attention of the fans, particularly the debutants, who will be playing their first ever match in a World Cup.
Cape Verde :
The Blue Sharks have been one of the most dominant teams in Africa. In the qualifiers, Cape Verde won the CAF Group D and pushed the much-fancied Cameroon to second place. Coached by former Cape Verdean player Bubista ( Pedro Brito), the team, comprising players playing in various leagues around the world, looks good to spring a surprise or two. Led by their all-time leading scorer Ryan Mendis, Cape Verde are a team to watch as they make their debut against Spain on the 15th of June, in a daunting Group H including Saudi Arabia and Uruguay too.
Curaçao :
The tiny island nation became the smallest country by population ( 1.56 lacs) to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, eclipsing the record held by Iceland. Coached by Dutchman Dick Advocaat, Curaçao ran an exceptionally gritty campaign in the CONCACAF Group B, which featured the more fancied Jamaica. Needing a draw in the last game of the qualifiers against Jamaica at Kingston, Curaçao fought tooth and nail and denied Jamaica a victory to advance to the World Cup. Curaçao’s story is nothing short of a fairy tale. The Blue Waves will feature in Group E alongside Germany, the Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
Jordan :
The Nashama ( The Chivalrous Ones) broke their World Cup jinx by putting up a spirited performance right through their qualifying campaign. Under Coach Jamal Sellami, Jordan edged out Iraq to qualify automatically after coming second to South Korea in Group B of the final round of the Asian qualifiers. Blessed with a terrific generation of footballers, Jordan have a splendid attacking trio of Mousa Al-Tamari, Yazan Al-Naimat and Ali Alwan, backed up by a solid defence under Yazan Al-Arab and Abdallah Nasib. Jordan, no wonder, were tough to break and hence earned their place in the World Cup. The Nashama will play in Group J alongside defending Champions Argentina, Austria and Algeria.
Uzbekistan :
The White Wolves are Central Asia’s first nation to qualify for the World Cup and complete the Rookie Quartet participating in North America. Managed by Italian legend Fabio Cannavaro, the Uzbeks played a gruelling 16 games before booking their ticket to the World Cup. Of the 16 games, the white wolves won 10, drew 5 and had just a solitary loss ( 2-3 to Qatar, which they later avenged). Built on a resolute defence and tight compact play, the Uzbeks were very difficult to score against. Cannavaro, without a doubt, has built a team of tough warriors who can stun a few in the World Cup. The White Wolves will feature in Group K alongside Colombia, DR Congo and Portugal.
It will be interesting to see how these teams perform. Will they be overawed by the situation, or will they give wings to their Cinderella Story?
