Bayern Munich, the Bundesliga Champions, visited the Mewa Arena in Mainz last evening, with Vincent Kompany giving a well-deserved rest to his regulars, before the all-important Champions League semifinal clash with PSG next week.
Mainz played an exceptional first half, slicing down the Bayern defence from the left innumerable times. Mainz had Bayern on a leash as a troubled Vincent Kompany looked on. The hosts not only dominated the first half but scored 3 goals too, to leave Bayern reeling under a three-goal deficit at the break. Kohr, Nebel and Becker scored a goal each.
Vincent Kompany brought in the changes as the second half started, with Michael Olise and Harry Kane coming on to the field to bolster Bayern. The Champions found their rhythm and made Mainz pay.
The tide changed completely, as Bayern began to play like Champions. Nicolas Jackson scored first, and then Michael Olise struck a beauty which curled in from his left foot to enter Mainz’s net. The goal demoralised Mainz as they further slipped and lost control of proceedings. The lead was vanishing quickly.
Jamal Musiala, who had a good game, got the equaliser in a goalmouth scramble, and then Harry Kane scored his 33rd goal of the 25/26 Bundesliga and Bayern’s 113th, to give his team the lead in the 83rd minute, which at half-time looked out of reach.
Bayern held on for the next 7 minutes to deny Mainz and emerged victorious for the 26th time in 31 games in the league this season. The statistics for Bayern are not only staggering but difficult to believe. They now have an average of 3.64 goals per match in the Bundesliga.
Mainz played extremely well in the first half, but disintegrated when Bayern launched a serious offensive. The winning mindset of the Bavarians held them in good stead to overcome a big deficit and still win.
No Beating Bayern… The message has been sent to PSG.
