For many, it is wired to their hearts, minds and souls. For many, it is a matter of honour and pride. And for many, it is just life in its entirety. This is why we have a phenomenon called Coventry.
The Story of Coventry City FC
Coventry City Football Club is a story of a cascading fall to a point of no return. A story of suffering and embarrassment. A story of losing it all and then the rise from the dead. A story of unbreakable grit. A story of steely determination and self-belief. And a story of an unshakeable desire of a City that refused to let go of its club.
The Free Fall
Coventry City Football Club used to be a regular in the EPL, but once they got relegated 25 seasons ago, all hell broke loose. From EPL to Championship, then further down to 1st Division and then slipping further into the second division, Coventry were in a free fall.
Financial Issues
With the team hurtling down, the club got hit financially too, and then came a point when it lost its stadium as well. The team had to share a ground 70 miles away from Coventry for practise, which further compounded the problems.
Fans’ Protests Echo in Parliament
Coventry Fans hurt by the fall of their club came out on the streets to protest and appeal for the Club’s resurrection. The protests were so strong that they echoed in the British Parliament.
The Ownership Changes As Mark Robbins Resurrects The Club
A local investor took over the club, and the rental issue with the Club’s stadium was resolved, but more importantly, Mark Robbins arrived at the club in 2017 to kick-start Coventry’s rise from the dead.
Mark Robbins’ Sacking & Arrival of Frank Lampard
Mark Robbins managed the Sky Blues for 7 years, getting them back into the Championship, but then the Club again was threatened to be relegated into the 1st division, when to the surprise and heartache of Coventry fans, Mark Robbins was sacked and Frank Lampard was appointed Manager to bail out the club from being relegated to the 1st division.
Lampard Not Well Received By Fans
Lampard, a highly successful player for Chelsea and England, but not that successful as a Manager ( was sacked from Chelsea), was in the wilderness for 18 months, and his appointment did not go well with the emotionally charged fans of Coventry City FC.
Lampard Puts The Club On Track
Frank Lampard was hated rather than loved, but the fans didn’t know that he was the right man for the job. Coventry escaped relegation and the following season lost narrowly in the Championship playoff to qualify for the EPL. It was heartbreaking, but huge positives were emerging for the club.
Promotion To The EPL
The 25-26 season will be marked in Coventry’s history as a game changer. The Sky Blues’ 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers confirmed their re-entry into the English Premier League after a quarter of a century. The Fans broke down and tears flowed. The players too were dumbfounded. They had achieved something mammoth and gigantic for the Club. Frank Lampard had done it.
Coventry with 43 games ( 3 to go) were ranked no. 1 in the Championship and were automatically confirmed as participants in the EPL for the 26-27 season.
True Inspiration
What an inspiring story it has been. 25 years of pain, labour and patience eventually paid off. The fans stood by their Club and by their team in all these years in an unflinching show of solidarity and love.
