Mo Salah became the first African to score 50 goals in the history of the UEFA Champions League as Liverpool dismantled Galatasaray 4-0 at Anfield last night, to advance to the quarter finals on a 4-1 aggregate.
It was a tremendous team effort from the Reds as the hosts secured their first win in 3 games against Galatasaray. The emphatic victory gave tons of breathing space for the underfire Arne Slot.
Dominik Szoboszlai scored the first with a brilliant strike from a creative corner kick. Salah missed a couple of clear chances including a penalty. It was rare for the Egyptian to see a penalty slip, but so it happened as Liverpool heads went down.
In an 11 minute frenzy in the second half, however, Liverpool just blew the Turkish side away. Ekitike and Gravenberch scored in composed finishes while the icing on the cake came from Mo Salah.
Salah’s left foot curler, unleashed from the edge of the box, beat the goalkeeper’s outstretched right hand as the super strike stunned the Turks no end. It was vintage Salah, the classical one indeed. The incredible effort gave Salah his 50th goal in the UEFA Champions League, elevating him to be the first African to do so.
Liverpool, thus cruised to the Quarter Finals wherein they will meet the defending Champions PSG in April, which is going to be a real test for the Reds.
Arne Slot was certainly a relieved man. The team unfortunately has lacked consistency this year, but the question is, can they lay their hands on some silverware this season. FA Cup and Champions League are the two Trophies still available for Liverpool.
Come on Reds!!
