The UEFA Champions League is one such competition where Real Madrid can never be underestimated. The critics might have their doubts and their recent form sketchy, Los Blancos are a force in football and they proved it yet again on the big stage. Manchester City were unfortunately at the receiving end of Real Madrid’s brilliance last night at the Etihad.
The 2nd leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 was played out at the Etihad stadium last night, with Manchester City looking to overturn a 0-3 deficit. It was an uphill task and though the Citizens had Sporting’s exploits for inspiration, they never looked gritty enough to take the fight to Real Madrid.
Vinicius Jr was once again at his sublime best. Moving brilliantly with his electric pace. He hit the goal post with a thunderous strike. The ball went flying off his boot. It was a spectacular hit. Vinicius struck again from the rebound and earned his team a penalty as Bernardo Silva’s handball earned him a red card too.
Vinicius scored with ease as Manchester City went 0-4 down on aggregate, with 10 men to play out most part of the match.
Erling Haaland got one back in the 41st minute, but much more was needed from City which unfortunately never happened. Real Madrid were far too strong and Pep Guardiola’s side just did not have the gumption to challenge the Spanish giants.
Vinicius scored again in stoppage time in an excellent move from the right flank. The cross landed on Vinicius’ feet and the ball ended in the net. It was so smoothly orchestrated. Manchester City were well and truly beaten. Guardiola in a brown chequered shirt knew what was coming once they had lost the first leg at Bernabeu. A miracle was required which failed to come by last night.
Los Blancos under Arbeloa once again silenced the critics and entered the UEFA Champions League quarter final for the umpteenth time.
What a Team!!
