The Giant Stumbles As Bayern Lose Their First Game in Bundesliga

Bayern lose to Augsburg

Bayern Munich went 18 games without a loss, scored a staggering 71 goals in the process and strengthened their position at the top with an 11-point lead. Though the Bundesliga title appears to be a foregone conclusion, Bayern’s first loss in their 19th game of the season is big news.

Augsburg, struggling in the bottom half of the Bundesliga table, had just 4 wins in 18 games and had scored just 20 goals before they met Bayern at the Allianz Arena in Munich, this evening.

Bayern took the lead through the unstoppable, goal-scoring machine, Harry Kane in the 23rd minute and held on to the advantage till a gritty-looking Augsburg side turned the tables in a 6-minute burst.

Arthur Chavez and then Frenchman Han-Noah Massengo scored in the 75th and the 81st minute respectively, against the run of play. Bayern were stunned, and so was the Allianz Arena.

Vincent Kompany, chasing history, tried everything to retrieve the match. He pushed Musiala and Kimmich to bolster the already decorated field with Olise, Diaz and Kane, but Augsburg held on to the lead and handed Bayern their first loss. Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen remains the only team to stay unbeaten in the Bundesliga.

Giants are vulnerable too. Augsburg proved it today.
