Ousmane Dembele, the Ballon d’Or winner, had had a chequered season so far due to injury concerns and therefore had not been able to repeat the heroics of last season. He was unstoppable then and had put PSG on the pinnacle of the sport.
The brilliance of a fit again Dembele resurfaced as PSG played host to Lille at the Parc de Princes in Paris yesterday evening, surprisingly trailing Lens by 1 point.
Lille, led by Oliver Giroud, started very well and came close to scoring twice, but Giroud hit the post on both occasions and failed to score. However, Dembele hit bulls eye in the 13th minute with a peach of a left-footer. The ball curled in enough from a good 20 yards to hit the inside of the goal post and enter the net. Berke Ozer, Lille’s goalkeeper just didn’t have a chance. The strike was a spectacular one from Dembele.
PSG went into ascendancy after the goal. The defence was good too, and at halftime, PSG led 1-0.
The moment of magic, however, came in the 64th minute when Dembele chipped one over the head of Ozer to score PSG’s second goal. The chip was from just inside the box. Ozer was slightly away from his line, which made Dembele play the audacious chip, which incredibly sailed into the net. The precision and the finish from Dembele were exceptional. Ozer just could not believe how well Dembele had outwitted him.
The young Bradley Barcola, who came on as a substitute, scored with a composed finish to make it 3-0 for PSG in stoppage time. The hosts eventually wrapped it up.
It was indeed Dembele’s night. He displayed his skill and class in an emphatic exhibition of football.
The win took PSG to the top of the heap for a while before Lens beat Auxerre by a solitary goal to regain the one-point lead over PSG at the top of the Ligue 1 table.
