Gabon had a poor outing in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), losing all their matches in the Group Stage and hence failing to qualify for the round of 16. However, the repercussions were severe for the Team and coaching staff.
The Govt of Gabon’s reaction was drastic. The Sports Ministry suspended the team, sacked the coaching staff and banned star players Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bruno Ecuele Manga from further selection to the national side.
Gabon, drawn in Group F against the Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Mozambique, lost their first two games to be pushed out of the competition. However, the Panthers were leading 2-0 against Ivory Coast in their last game, but conceded 3 goals in the end to lose the contest. The loss was difficult to swallow and triggered a reaction from the Gabon government.
Aubameyang and Manga had skipped the last game, with the former having left the squad to join his club Marseille after a thigh injury.
Thierry Mouyouma, Gabon’s former defender and now coach of the team, was sacked as well.
