It was an outrageous situation when Idrissa Gueye, Everton’s midfielder, got into a spat with his teammate Michael Keane. Keane had sharply checked Gueye after some loose play in the Everton box. Gueye, allegedly (which was later verified by VAR), slapped Keane, resulting in a Red Card for Gueye. Everton were reduced to 10 men in the 13th minute, handing over a one man advantage to Manchester United.
Adversity in sport, however, triggers the best out of the sportsman, and Everton as a team came together to script an unprecedented performance.
First, it was Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who, in a moment of magic, struck the goal of Match Day 12 last night. His brilliant right footer curled in from the left, kissed the outstretched fingers of Lamens and sailed into the goal. It was indeed an immaculate strike which stunned Old Trafford.
United went on the offensive to equalise, but Jordan Pickford, Everton and England’s goalkeeper, had a night to remember. I really lost track of the saves he made. It was as if the United players were up against an impermeable wall in front of the Everton goal.
Mbeumo, Diallo, Zirkzee, Bruno Fernandes, et al., tried their best but could not pierce Jordan Pickford’s unbelievable web. He was virtually everywhere, throwing himself in the air, stretching from left to right, but bravely defending his goal.
Manchester United hit 23 shots and had 9 corners in a 70% possession dominance. But Everton kept the Red Devils, putting their bodies on line. They were 10 against 11, but showed tremendous determination to deny United a goal.
Everton eventually came through 1-0 to register a famous win under Manager David Moyes.
