It was Pep Guardiola’s 1000th game as Manager, an occasion to be celebrated for one of Football’s greatest Managers. Manchester City playing Liverpool at home was the perfect fit, as Match Day 11 of the EPL 25/26 culminated at the Etihad Stadium.
Guardiola’s achievement was staggering, but he wore an emotionless look, more focussed on the job at hand in the dugout. A win for City would take them to second spot on the EPL table. For Liverpool, a victory would keep them within striking distance of leaders Arsenal. It was going to be a cracker of a game, and so it lived up to its expectations.
Jeremy Doku, the burly Belgian, gifted with tremendous speed, a low centre of gravity giving him great balance and ball skills as good as any, put up a performance to remember. It was stirring to say the least as Doku mesmerised the Manchester City fans with his exceptional play.
For Liverpool, it was difficult to keep pace with Doku whenever he got the ball on the left flank. His searing pace was too hot to handle for the Reds. City made a fine start while Liverpool struggled to get the ball initially.
Doku exerted huge pressure on the Liverpool defence, which eventually cracked. The Reds’ goalkeeper, Mamardashvilli, brought down Doku, leading to a penalty. Erling Haaland, the goal-scoring machine for City, missed, to everyone’s surprise, striking a weak one which Mamardashvilli brilliantly saved.
However, the pressure on Liverpool continued to rise as City pressed for ascendancy, and eventually a fine loopy header by the talismanic Haaland got City ahead. Nico Gonzalez then made it 2-0 for City at the stroke of halftime before Virgil van Dijk’s goal was disallowed.
Gonzalez struck a fine short which deflected off the foot of Van Dijk, wrong-footed the keeper and entered the net. City were ahead at the break by 2, looking formidable.
The second half witnessed some intent from Liverpool as Arne Slot pushed his boys to stack forward, from the sidelines, but then the moment of magic arrived.
Doku, as usual, beat his marker with his sensational speed. The pouring rain notwithstanding, the Belgian darted towards the box, moved to his right to create space and then belted one that curled into the net. It was a swirling ripper from Doku. Liverpool were stunned for good. Doku had blown away the wind off their sails. The crowd was up on its feet in a rapturous applause, as the match moved beyond the hour.
Liverpool did try to create an impression, but their pathetic midfield play, a lethargic defence and an off-colour forward line failed to dent City’s resolute demeanour. Eventually, the scoreline read 3-0 in favour of Manchester City, who by far proved to be the better team on the field.
Finally, it has to be said that City’s emphatic victory at the Etihad was indeed a great tribute to Pep Guardiola’s 1000th match as Manager.
