Lionel Messi once again showcased his eternal talent and skill as he led Argentina to a 3-0 victory over Venezuela in a World Cup Qualifier at the gigantic Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires last night.
The Defending World Champions, who have already qualified for the FIFA World Cup to be jointly held in 2026 in the USA, Canada and Mexico, showed no signs of slowing down. They were ruthless, so to say, and gave no chance to Venezuela to stage a comeback at any time in the match. Emiliano Martinez, Argentina’s goalkeeper had literally nothing to do in the entire match. It was sheer dominance from the Champions.
Messi broke the deadlock in the 39th minute after a Julian Alvarez assist saw Messi play a delectable chip over the Venezuelan goalkeeper to send the ball clear into the net. It was a terrific finish from the wizard. Till then, Rafael Romo, Venezuela’s goalkeeper, had made several saves and denied Argentina.
Lautaro Martinez received a fine cross from the left and scored in the 76th minute. Four minutes later, Almada ran through the right flank, centered to Messi, who gleefully obliged with a precise tap-in, to score his second and Argentina’s third.
The stadium packed to the rafters went up in applause. They had their monies worth seeing their Champion score and their team win. It was an emotional night as the match could well be Messi’s last international game at home. There were tears all around. Scaloni, the Argentine Manager, was emotional right through the match. It could well be his last match too.
Argentina looked great and will not be easy to play against as the World Cup 2026 arrives in a few months from now.
