The football fraternity in England and around the world, the die-hard fans of Manchester United, football experts, critics, and the media have been extremely critical and even severely harsh on Manchester United, Ruben Amorim, and the players. The upheaval occurred after the Old Trafford Club and one of the biggest brands in Football, lost to 4th-tier Grimsby Town and was knocked out of the EFL Carabao Cup in the 2nd round.
The pent-up feelings after a disastrous EPL 24/25 season just blew up after the loss to Grimsby Town, which had followed a loss and a draw in the opening two fixtures of the new EPL season.
Ruben Amorim was under severe criticism after he sat in the dugout undeterred and appeared disinterested, while his team faced a nerve-wracking tie-breaker against Grimsby Town. Manchester United lost the Tie-breaker, and all hell broke loose.
My assessment, however, may slightly differ from the all and sundry who have demanded the removal of Ruben Amorim with immediate effect and have been vociferous in their criticism.
The players need to take a lot of blame for their performances. Against Grimsby in particular, the players were flat. There was no intensity or energy on display. They hardly ran and hardly fought for the ball. They let themselves be outplayed and exploited by the opposition, which is exactly what happened. On the other hand, Grimsby players gave it their all and fought hard. In fact, they should have beaten United in normal time.
Amorim, in his emotional outburst after the match, clearly pointed out the shortcomings. He knew exactly what had gone wrong. The excruciating pain due to the loss was writ large on his face. He just couldn’t defend his players, and he didn’t want to either. A team with gifted skill and massive talent was bereft of intent whatsoever.
Let us not rush to push Ruben Amorim out. He has a good record, and what I like most about him is his passion for the game and his zeal to win. Tactically, too, Amorim has not been bad either. The Club Management should repose faith in him. That will give Amorim confidence. The fans also need to back him.
Ruben Amorim may just turn it around; it is just the players who need to get their act together.
