Manchester United were knocked out of the EFL Carabao Cup in the second round after losing to second division Grimsby Town Football Club in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.
A match, expected to be a no-contest between giants Manchester United and minnows Grimsby, became yet another painful chapter in recent history for Manchester United and a harrowing part of their serious decline.
Ruben Amorim fielded a strong side at Blundell Park in North East Lincolnshire, home to Grimsby Town Football Club, to make a strong statement. However, the United players were in no mood to turn their coach’s thoughts into action and were pushed back by 2 quick goals from the hosts within the first half hour of the match.
The first goal by Charles Vernam was a fine piece of finishing from the left flank. With acres of space to his comfort, Vernam controlled a terrific cross, took his time, and shot past Onana to his right. The small gap was enough for the ball to sneak through as Onana failed to stop it. The defending was pathetic from United. Vernam was completely unmarked, and the slow movement of United defenders made it even easier for Vernam. The defenders just did not anticipate the cross, and though Vernam produced a brilliant strike, Manchester United were poor in defence and in goal.
A few minutes later, Onana messed up a clearance and gave away the second goal. Onana had ample time to punch away the cross, but was slow to react, and the moment he missed the ball, Grimsby’s Tyrell Warren latched onto it and tapped in with ease.
As much as Onana slipped in his performance, Christy Pym grew in his. Grimsby’s goalkeeper defied Manchester United as the hosts defended bravely until Mbeumo got his left footer ripper to deflect off a defender and find the net. United had reduced the lead in the 75th minute. Harry Maguire then got it levelled in the 89th after a fine header. United had gotten square after a lot of sweat.
The match went into a penalty shootout. Matheus Cunha had to score for a United win, but against expectations, he took an extremely weak penalty kick, which was stopped easily by Pym. The tie-breaker then entered into sudden death. One miss and gone for good. At 12-11, Mbeumo came forward to take his second penalty and hit the crossbar. It was all over. United were knocked out of the EFL Cup for good.
Grimsby Town had caused a major upset. Fans besieged the field as Blundell Park went into an incredible frenzy. United were in shock. The dejection was telling on their faces. But they had themselves to blame. They started the match very slowly. The defending and goalkeeping were pedestrian, and the second goal in particular was a plain gift.
Ruben Amorim wore a melancholic look. Heartbroken to say the least. He would now be under enormous pressure to turn this around in the shortest possible time. The next match in the Premier League, against Burnley this Saturday at Old Trafford, will be extremely critical. Nothing short of a comprehensive win would be acceptable to the people who matter and the fans alike.
Manchester United have unfortunately hit a new low. Need to call in Sir Alex Ferguson.
