Al-Nassr were on the brink of victory. Marcelo Brozovic, the Croatian midfielder, had put his team ahead in the 82nd minute. There were just a few minutes to hold Al-Ahli Saudi at bay, and the Saudi Super Cup was Al-Nassr’s for the taking. But destiny had it otherwise. Roger Ibanez, Al-Ahli’s Brazilian Centre back, equalised in the 89th minute to deny Al-Nassr and pushed the game into a tie-breaker.
Al-Nassr had dominated proceedings right through the match and twice had the lead, just to be whisked away by a plucky opposition. After 62% possession and 12 shots on goal, Al-Nassr failed to seal the match.
The tie-breaker, with nerves jangling, was anybody’s game. Al-Ahli Saudi kept their nerves and in the end snatched away the Saudi Super Cup from right under Al-Nassr’s nose, winning 5-3 on penalties.
Kudos to captain Edouard Mendy who was in sensational form during the match and also in the tie-breaker, as he denied Abdullah Al Khaibani to win it for Al-Ahli.
Cristiano Ronaldo did his bit by scoring the first goal for Al-Nassr, but unfortunately, found himself on the losing side yet again. His Trophy-less sojourn with Al-Nassr just continues, unabated.
