The UEFA Super Cup Final played between the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League, will be held on Wednesday night, the 13th of August, at the resplendent Stadio Friuli, now known as the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine, Italy. Paris Saint-Germain, the winners of the Champions League, and Tottenham Hotspur, the winners of the Europa League, will lock horns for the stellar trophy.
PSG has been the Club to beat. Riding on a wave of scintillating performances across competitions, the Parisian Club, no wonder, would be the favourite to take another title home and set aside the disappointment of losing the FIFA Club World Cup Final to Chelsea, a few weeks ago. That loss may propel them further to win the Super Cup and stamp their authority in Europe.
Ousmane Dembele, who has the edge over all others for the Ballon d’Or, has been a treat to watch. His energy, pace, and sublime striking skills have been a revelation. His coming of age from the shadows of Mbappe has given PSG a telling reassurance. Along with Dembele, the rise of Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola, and Kvaratskhelia has given PSG a razor sharp forward line, which has been relentless in offense. Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz in the middle, the experience of Achraf Hakimi, and the brilliance of Donnarumma in goal make PSG an extremely formidable unit.
Tottenham Hotspur, on the other hand, is in a phase of transition. The departure of Son Heung -min and the injury to James Maddison have pushed Tottenham on the defensive. Thomas Frank at the helm (from Brentford) will have his hands full. He needs to tighten up the defense and surprise PSG with quick counters to thwart the French Club’s charge. Thomas Frank would be looking to upset the seamlessly flowing football from the Luis Enrique side, which would be Tottenham’s best chance.
My vote is with PSG to win the Super Cup. A 2-0 scoreline in favour of the Parisians is my call.
