Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr & Its Struggles
Despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s prolific goal-scoring in his stint with Al-Nassr, spanning almost three seasons, the Portuguese legend has yet to win anything substantial for the Club. The 24/25 Saudi Pro League season too went a begging as Al-Nassr came third behind Champions Al-Ittihad and runners-up Al-Hilal. Ronaldo, though, was the highest scorer in the Saudi Pro League, his team still struggled to get to the top with some chequered form.
A Frustrated Ronaldo Pushes For Change As Jorge Jesus Arrives
A loss in the AFC Champions League had a frustrated Ronaldo calling for changes in the team and particularly at the helm. Not surprisingly, the management of Al-Nassr had to act. Stefano Pioli, the head coach of Al-Nassr, was axed without delay. His replacement was a critical decision, though, and after careful consideration and critical inputs from Cristiano Ronaldo, Jorge Jesus, the 71-year-old Portuguese, was appointed as Head Coach for Al-Nassr.
Jesus – A Seasoned Campaigner
Jorge Jesus, a former Portuguese player and a vastly experienced and decorated football manager with a fair exposure to Saudi Football, just fitted the bill. A former coach of Al-Hilal, Jesus had two notable stints with the Riyadh-based club; however, his performance with Benfica and Flamengo has been simply outstanding.
A Sterling Stint With Benfica For Jorge Jesus
Jesus arrived at Benfica in 2009 and held the reins of the club for 6 seasons, winning 10 trophies. He created a record of sorts for the club, becoming the only manager to win all domestic competitions at least once. Jesus also reached 2 UEFA Europa Cup Finals with Benfica in his glittering stint with them.
Success With Flamengo Too
In 2019, Jorge Jesus moved to Brazil to coach Flamengo and won the Copa Libertadores and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A in his very first year.
Jesus – A True Fit For Al-Nassr
Jesus might just be the mix of experience and the zeal to win, which Al-Nassr truly needs. With a starry lineup comprising of Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, and the young Jhon Duran, this could well be the breakout season for Al-Nassr.
Fans’ Wait May Come To An End
The fans have been desperate to see their team lift some silverware. Maybe their arduous wait is about to come to an end. We shall know as the season begins in a month.
