Wimbledon 2025: Daniil Medvedev Loses In The 1st Rd
The first day at Wimbledon 2025 was a tough day for some of the big names in Tennis, but the one that came as a big surprise was the elimination of 9th seed and last year’s semi-finalist Daniil Medvedev. The talented Russian and one of the best in business went down in 4 sets to Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi.
Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi Takes Down Medvedev
The 64th seed Bonzi stunned Medvedev 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 to move to the second round at the cost of the Russian, who had reached two consecutive semi-finals in 2024 and 2023. The latest slide in Medvedev’s career is worrisome for the former US Open Champion, who also lost in the first round of the French Open a few weeks ago.
Medvedev Lost More Mentally Than Physically
Medvedev smashed his racquet against his chair and kit to take out his frustration as the match slipped from his grasp. Once the third set went to Bonzi in another tie-break, Medvedev looked more weary mentally than physically and perished after a 3-hour duel.
Enigma Around Medvedev Continues
One of the most enigmatic players on the ATP tour, Medvedev could engage with the crowd, and his sensational tennis, many a time, had the crowd going up in raptures. His plummeting form and with it his ranking would be a serious concern for his fans.
A Great Win For Bonzi At Wimbledon
For Bonzi, it was his first top 10 scalp of his career as he rejoiced on moving to the second round. He played sublime tennis when it really mattered, and particularly was good in the tie-breaks, which Medvedev messed up.
Rune Bundled Out Of Wimbledon Too on Day 1
Holger Rune, seeded 8th, too, perished in 5 sets against Chilean Nicholas Jarry after winning the first two sets. Jarry eventually won, 4-6,4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, sending the Dane out of the competition. Tsitsipas and Alexei Popyrin were also eliminated on a day of upsets.
