Australian Cricket Team : Time For An Overhaul

Australian Cricket Needs Introspection

Australia Humbled

Australia were humbled by South Africa in the Finals of the World Test Championship at Lord’s yesterday. The result was a surprise for many as the underdogs who were written off before the final, upstaged the favourites to win the coveted title. However, on closer analysis, it could well be said that an upcoming young Proteas team got the better of the  tiring warhorses from Australia.

A Serious Introspection Is Required

The loss is indeed indicative of the condition of the Australian Test Cricket Team and how much it requires a serious introspection and a possible overhaul to keep Australia amongst the best.

It Is Time For Khawaja To Hang His Boots

Usman Khawaja has served Australian Cricket with distinction and has been the main stay of their top order. However, he has been found wanting of late, particularly against quality pace bowling, which is a reflection of the fact that age might just be catching up with him. He is beyond 38 now, and maybe it is time for him to hang up his boots. Sam Konstas needs to be inducted for the long haul.

A Break For Labuschagne Too

Marnus Labuschagne, who had been so critical to Australia’s success in the Tests and ODIs, is passing through a dreaded patch of inconsistent  performances. He probably needs a break too, and it may not be a bad option to let him find his form in domestic cricket and get back into the team.

Smith & Head The Load Carriers

Steve Smith is already 36 and has a huge responsibility on his shoulders, and if his career has to be extended further, his load has to be shared. The same goes for Travis Head, too. Both Smith and Head are constantly under severe pressure to get Australia out of troubled situations. Cameron Green needs to step up significantly. Beau Webster, though looks good.

Inglis For Carey

Alex Carey is also at the fag end of his career but has a good replacement in Josh Inglis waiting in the wings. It’s time for the young Josh to take over from Carey.

Bowling Bench Strength A Worry

The Bowling has been brilliant for Australia, but a formidable bench strength is missing. Starc and Lyon may not have many years in the bag, and though Australia has a tremendous Domestic strength of cricketers, I am unable to witness anyone who has the potential of Starc or Lyon.

It is not going to be easy for Pat Cummins and Australia to rebuild, but then that is the only way forward.
