Tottenham vs United: The Clash Of The Beleaguered
Tottenham and Manchester United clashed at the Estadio de San Mamés at Bilbao in Spain, last night in the Europa League Final. The two struggling English Clubs played out a cagey affair, which evidenced and reflected the dire state of affairs at both clubs.
Brennan Johnson & Dogged Defence Wins It For Tottenham
There had to be a winner, though, and Tottenham, the beleaguered Spurs ( who just managed to stay adrift of the relegation zone in the EPL), somehow managed to score a goal through Brennan Johnson in the first half. They then defended doggedly to deny Manchester United and win the tie and the Europa League.
Ange Vindicated: Spurs Win Trophy After 17 Years
In the end, it was a clear vindication of Ange Postecoglou’s faith in Tottenham as they managed to win some silverware after 17 years without a major trophy. A season doomed to say the least, Tottenham had something to cheer about with a silver lining amongst the dark clouds.
A Dreadful Season For Spurs But Some Joy In The End
Tottenham had begun the season brilliantly, scoring with gay abandon, but then a spate of injuries and an extremely porous defence (conceding 61 goals), led to a massive and quick downslide. From the top half in the EPL, Tottenham slipped and eventually came to rest at the 17th position, losing 21 games out of 37, despite scoring 63 goals ( 6th highest along with Chelsea), in a terrible crash post-December. A win, nevertheless, and a trophy to boot might just be enough for the Spurs to come back strongly next season.
No Redemption For Man United: Amorim’s Future Uncertain
There was, unfortunately, no redemption for Manchester United. Their worst season in 50 years culminated in another setback. Struggling at 16th position in the EPL, United would be confined to the Premier League next season with absolutely no say in European competitions. Ruben Amorim brought in with lots of hope to resurrect a failing mammoth edifice, literally failed to arrest the problem and may face an uncertain future.
Time To Get Their Mojo Back
Though the year has been tough for both Tottenham and United, they are good enough clubs, and it would be interesting to see how they regain their mojo.
