Chennai Super Kings (CSK), having a forgettable IPL 2025 and languishing at the bottom, having exited the play-offs race ages ago, had something to cheer about last night. The Dhoni-led yellow outfit beat the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a close contest at the Eden Gardens with loads of help from Dewald Brevis.

Dewald Brevis, the young South African who played for the Mumbai Indians a few years ago, was CSK’s man of the hour. The belligerent batter with loads of talent was tipped to be the next AB de Villiers. The world was in awe of his ability to strike the ball akin to ABD, the South African wizard. But Brevis just disappeared from the scene, and not much was heard about him, until he reappeared in CSK colours.
Brilliant Brevis Wins It For CSK
CSK, after a string of comprehensive defeats, decided to give Dewald Brevis a look in, and the talented batter just did not disappoint. Yesterday, he showed why he was so highly rated when he sent Vaibhav Arora to the cleaners and amassed 30 runs in one over. The match took a decisive turn in CSK’s favour, and they romped home with two balls to spare, with Dhoni striking a 6 in the last over. Shivam Dubey too played a good hand for CSK but departed at the wrong time to give some nervy jitters to the visitors.
KKR’s Playoff Hopes Dashed
CSK’s win dealt a mighty blow to the defending champions KKR’s qualification for the playoffs, and in all probability look almost certain to miss the bus now.
Brevis’ Knock Turned The Tide
KKR struggled in the first innings under Noor’s spell, who plucked out 4 and could reach only 179 runs in 20 overs. And though KKR had CSK reeling at 60/5 in the chase, Dewald Brevis’ innings of 52 off just 25 balls completely turned the momentum in CSK’s favour.

The re-emergence of Dewald Brevis is great news for South Africa and also for World Cricket. The charisma attached to this exceptional talent is something to cheer for. CSK need to have a long-term relationship with Brevis to reap benefits in the future.
