Aston Villa Prove Me Wrong

I was expecting a good show from Aston Villa, but had preferred to play safe with my money. I had bet on Newcastle, the team in exceptional form, to emerge winners at Villa Park. How wrong I have been proved by the Villans, who played out of their skin to triumph over the high-flying Magpies.

Ollie Watkins’ Fine Start For Villa

The writing was on the wall, though it was a hazardous guess, as Aston Villa scored inside the first minute of the game through Ollie Watkins and a bit of a deflection.  Watkins was at it again with a terrific strike from an acute angle on the left flank, only to be denied by the cross-bar.

Newcastle Fight Back With A Fabian Schar Goal

The signs were ominous, but Newcastle fought back to score through the Swiss International Fabian Schar’s easy header in the 18th minute. Unfortunately for the Magpies, that was the only success they could have in the entire match as the Villans took charge of the contest.

Aston Villa Score Thrice in 11 Minutes to Seal The Game

Ian Maatsen, the Dutch defender, scored in the 64th minute as Aston Villa continued their relentless charge on the Newcastle goal. Dan Burn, the hero of the Magpies’ Carabao Cup victory not so long ago, unfortunately scored an own goal in the 73rd minute. Two minutes later, Amadou Onana struck a powerful shot laced with exquisite precision to score Aston Villa’s fourth. 3 goals in 11 minutes were a body blow to Newcastle, and they never recovered. A 4-1 win in the end for Villans.

A Subdued Day For Newcastle

Newcastle’s celebrated forwards and goal scorers, Isak and Murphy in particular, had an extremely subdued day. Overall too, the Magpies squad appeared tired and a bit jaded playing their third game in a week. But the loss might be troublesome going forward, as Manchester City won their game and are chasing the Magpies. Every match becomes critical from here on, and a consistent performance without any hiccups would be required to ensure a Champions League qualification.

A Brilliant Day For Aston Villa

Aston Villa, on the other hand, played brilliantly. Their brave performance against PSG doing them a world of good. The Villans find themselves in 6th place, just two points behind Newcastle in 3rd.
