India vs Australia Sydney Test Day 1. A Repetitive Script

Rohit Sharma Self Excludes

Rohit Sharma’s self exclusion was the only surprise as India took on Australia in a must win game at Sydney today. Though the reports were there I was not expecting such an unprecedented decision. Unfortunately, Rohit’s forced absence made no difference whatsoever. It was a repeat of the now most cliched script in Indian batting.

India ‘s Fragile Batting

The visitors could muster only 185 after Bumrah, the skipper  chose to bat on a greenish wicket. The much touted KL Rahul flicked a simple catch to Sam Konstas while India’s best bet in batting Yashasvi Jaiswal snicked one to the slips. Getting completely squared up by Scott Boland.

A No Brainer From Gill

At the stroke of Lunch Shubham Gill played an unusual shot off Lyon and was caught by Smith in the slips. The timing of the shot would have embarrassed Gill no doubt.

Virat’s Woes Keep Compounding

Virat Kohli’s woes continued unabated as he again edged outside the office stump and perished in the slip cordon without much of a contribution. He became Scott Boland’s second victim.

Rishabh Pant Miscues and Perishes

Rishabh Pant walked in,  a bit under the pump from all the criticism he had to bear post MCG. He curtailed his natural game and alongwith Jadeja began to rebuild the Indian innings. But the moment he reached 40, the adrenaline got to him and he perished playing a miscued pull to Scott Boland.

Nitish Reddy Goes For A Duck

Nitish Reddy, the centurian from MCG got one seaming away slightly on off stump from Boland. He was gobbled in the slips on the very first ball he faced. A duck it was for Nitish.

India succumb to 185

The rest of the batters came and went with Bumrah in the end striking a few lusty blows to reach 185.

The Extraordinary Bumrah Tames Khawaja

Bumrah then plucked out Khawaja for the 6th time in the series and could well have hastened the thoughts of retirement for the southpaw. Khawaja has found no answers to Bumrah and has struggled big time against the Indian ace.

The Usual Script

At the end of Day 1 the usual script unfolded. India succumbed to the Australian bowling and then Bumrah the lone fighter from India placing a few punches of his own.

An interesting day awaits us tomorrow.
